What is the MRCGP AKT?
The Applied Knowledge Test is the written component of the MRCGP, the membership exam for doctors training as GPs in the UK. It is a computer-based, multiple-choice exam usually sat during ST2. Questions span three areas: clinical medicine (the large majority), evidence interpretation and critical appraisal, and organisational/administrative topics relevant to UK general practice.
Because the AKT tests current UK general-practice standards, guideline currency matters: strong preparation is anchored in NICE, CKS and the BNF, with attention to the statistics and admin topics candidates often underestimate.
How to prepare for the MRCGP AKT
The AKT increasingly tests clinical reasoning through vignettes rather than isolated facts. To prepare:
Drill clinical questions to volume
Cover the breadth of general practice with exam-style SBAs, reviewing the reasoning behind each answer.
Don't neglect stats and admin
Evidence interpretation and organisational topics are a small but very scoreable slice — practise them deliberately rather than hoping for the best.
Use timed mocks
Full mocks in the AKT style build pacing and surface the topics you still need to firm up.
